How Many Slides Should a Carousel Have?

20 in the Instagram app, 10 through a tool, 300 pages for a LinkedIn document: the official limits, and how many slides your message really needs.

· Social platforms

As many slides as your idea needs, within the platform's limit. Instagram accepts up to 20 photos and videos in the app, but only 10 when the post goes through a scheduling tool. On LinkedIn, a document can run up to 300 pages. In practice, most brand carousels land somewhere between 5 and 10 slides.

The technical ceiling is not the goal: a carousel should be long enough to deliver on its promise and short enough that people finish it. The exact limits by format are in our Instagram guide and our LinkedIn guide; here is how to pick the right number.

What are the official limits on each platform?

PlatformLimitSource
Instagram (posting from the app)Up to 20 photos and videosRollout announced by Instagram in August 2024, reported by Social Media Today
Instagram (posting through a tool, via the API)10 images or videosMeta content publishing documentation
LinkedIn (PDF, PPT or DOC document)300 pages, 100 MBLinkedIn Help

These limits are current as of September 2026 and change often, so check them before building a very long carousel. The main trap is on Instagram: a 15-slide carousel works in the app but fails when scheduled through a tool. Another API detail: every image is cropped based on the first one, so prepare all slides in the same aspect ratio.

Why isn't the limit the right target?

A carousel is not judged by its slide count but by the reaction it gets. Instagram explains in its creator FAQ that distribution depends mostly on engagement per viewer. A carousel people abandon on slide three does nothing for your account, whether it has 8 slides or 20.

So every slide you add has to earn its place. If you can delete it without the message losing anything, delete it.

How many slides for what you want to say?

Type of carouselLength that often worksStructure
Announcement (launch, event, offer)3 to 5 slidesHook, the key point, practical details, the action
Product line or venue showcase5 to 8 slidesA strong opening image, one product or space per slide, a closing reminder
How-to, tutorial, list of tips6 to 10 slidesPromise, one step per slide, recap, invitation to save
In-depth LinkedIn document8 to 15 pagesThesis, context, evidence, method, conclusion
Event recap or "photo dump"Up to the limitHere, abundance is part of the fun; order still matters

These ranges are writing guidelines, not platform rules. Your audience is the only judge: compare your short and long carousels in your analytics.

  1. A first slide that makes a clear promise. It is the one that shows in the feed, and it tells people what they gain by swiping. For wording ideas, our collection of social media hooks works for carousel covers too.
  2. One idea per slide. If a slide needs two paragraphs, it contains two slides.
  3. Text that reads on a phone. Few words, a generous size, strong contrast.
  4. A consistent visual thread. Same typeface, same background, same title position from one slide to the next: readers should feel they are flipping through one object.
  5. A useful last slide. A recap, a question, an invitation to save or message you. Not just "thanks."

Look at what your own numbers say rather than an average found elsewhere:

  • Saves and shares: a saved carousel is content people found useful, whatever its length.
  • Comments about the ending: if nobody reacts to the last slide, few people saw it.
  • Comparing your carousels: over a month, alternate a short and a long version of the same kind of content, then keep the one that earns more saves.

Frequently asked questions

How many photos can you put in an Instagram carousel?

Up to 20 photos and videos when you post from the Instagram app. If you schedule the post with a tool, which goes through Meta's API, the limit is 10 items.

Do long carousels get less reach than short ones?

Instagram does not penalize length as such. Distribution depends mostly on how people who see the content react: a long, gripping carousel works, a long, repetitive one does not.

How many pages for a PDF carousel on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn accepts documents up to 300 pages and 100 MB. For a single post, about ten well-built pages are almost always enough to develop one idea.

Does every slide need text?

No. A product or photo carousel can skip text on the images and say everything in the caption. An educational carousel, on the other hand, needs a short title on each slide to make sense without the caption.
